The threat of being shot was enough to scare off a prowler in Burton, S.C.  The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said a woman was sitting on her couch one mid-December evening when a man appeared at her window and told her to open the door.  Instead, she grabbed her gun and pointed it at the man, who immediately fled.  Deputies searched for the suspect, but did not find him.  [The Island Packet;/Beaufort News, Beaufort, S.C., 12/19/2014)

This month's posting reflects an example from "studies [which] indicate that firearms are used more than 2 million times a year for personal protection, and that the presence of a firearm, without a shot being fired, prevents crime in many instances.  Shooting usually can be justified only where crime constitutes an immediate, imminent threat to life, limb, or in some cases, property."
